Exceptions to the Rules

There will likely be a necessity to have exceptions to the Rules, including Compliance Rules. The exceptions feature of Provisioning Solutions, enables specific users to be configured directly, without honoring any applicable Rules, including the Compliance Rules. Provisioning Solutions will enforce the settings defined in exceptions while disregarding any Rules or manual changes outside of the system.

Important:

Non-compliant user settings can result from exceptions to the Rules, owing to the fact that exceptions to the Rules override Compliance Rules.

To ensure all users return to the normal, Rule-led management of the Rules, all exceptions to the Rules have an expiration date. Once the exception to the Rule has expired, the user will be configured according to applicable Rules again.

Example:

A user from a country that does not allow the use of Voice-over-IP travels to a non-restricted country for a three-month project. The user would like to use Enterprise Voice for the duration of the project. An exception allowing Enterprise Voice can be entered for this specific user, along with a start and end date. Once the exception to the Rule has been configured, Provisioning Solutions will then automatically enable Enterprise Voice at the start date and return the user to the restricted settings once the exception has expired.

Other exceptions to the Rules examples include:

-     Test or pilot user accounts, to test a functionality that is not generally enabled yet.

-     VIP requirements. For example, video is required in a bandwidth-restricted site where video is not enabled.

-     Setting applicable to a very small group of users for which a Rule cannot be assembled.

Important:

Exceptions to Rules override Compliance Rules.
